Simple Analytical Methods for the Study of Light-Matter Interactions
November 22nd, 2018 JAVIER GARCÍA DE ABAJO Nanophotonics Theory
ICFO-The Institute of Photonic Sciences

We will discuss simple analytical tools that help us model the optical response of atoms, molecules, and solids, with special emphasis on the understanding of the behaviorof light in materials that are structured on small scales compared with the free-space wavelength. Specifically, we will review simple concepts of electromagnetism, as well as linear-and nonlinear-response theory based on classical and quantum-mechanical approaches. We will then apply these concepts to the interaction of quantum emitters and free electrons with photonic structures, the emergence and understanding of optical forces, and the description and engineering of localized and extended optical resonances driven by dielectric cavity modes, polaritonsin deep-subwavelength structures, and lattice resonances in periodic systems..
