New ICFOnians

Fourteen new ICFOnians joined the different ICFO research groups, units and facilities during the month of February. Welcome aboard!

March 18, 2019

Four postdoctoral researchers, three PhD students, one research engineer, five students, and one member of administration have joined ICFO during the month of February.

Giuseppe Calajo, who holds a 2019 PhD in Physics from the doctoral program CoQuS at TU Wien – Austria, is coming to ICFO as a postdoctoral reseacher at the Theoretical Quantum-Nano Photonics research group led by ICREA prof. at ICFO Darrick Chang. At ICFO he will be working on many-body collective effects in atom-light interfaces.

Dominic Hunter, who recently obtained a PhD from the University of Strathclyde, UK, is coming to ICFO to join the Atomic Quantum Optics research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Morgan Mitchell as a postdoctoral researcher. His position will allow him to work on the development of micro-fabricated atomic sensors.

Jose Ramon Duran holds a 2014 PhD in Photonics & Optoelectronics from the National Taiwan University (NTU), Taiwan, and is now joining the Low-Dimensional Quantum Materials research group led by ICFO prof. Dmitri Efetov as a postdoctoral researcher. His main tasks will involve studying single photon detection with 2D materials.

Emanuele Distante, who holds an ICFO PhD in Photonics from 2017, is coming to ICFO as a postdoctoral researcher at the Quantum Photonics with Solids and Atoms research group led by ICREA prof. at ICFO Hugues de Riedmatten. At ICFO he will be working on quantum non-linear optics with laser-cooled atoms.

Jan Lowinski, who obtained a 2015 MSc degree in Physics at ETH Zurich, is coming to ICFO to join the Optoelectronics research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Valerio Pruneri as a PhD student. His doctoral studies will focus on quantum technologies with new glass and ceramic materials.

Maximilian Heithoff holds a 2018 MSc from Aachen University, Germany, and is now joining the Quantum Nano-Optoelectronics research group led by ICREA prof. at ICFO Frank Koppens as a PhD student. His main tasks will involve working on 2D-material heterostructures.

Jennifer Aldama, who holds a 2018 MSc in Physics from the University of Puerto Rico, is coming to ICFO as a PhD student at the Optoelectronics research group led by ICREA prof. at ICFO Valerio Pruneri. At ICFO she will be working on ultrathin materials and nanostructured optical surface and devices.

Andres Black, who obtained a 2017 PhD from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, is coming to ICFO to join the Quantum Nano-Optoelectronics research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Frank Koppens as a research engineer. His position will allow him to work on the prototyping of graphene-based image sensors and spectrometers.

Diamantoula Maniaki is pursuing an MSc in Analytical Chemistry and Nanotechnology from the University of Patras and is now joining the Functional Optoelectronic Nanomaterials research group led by ICREA prof. at ICFO Gerasimos Konstantatos as a student. Her main tasks will involve working on the synthesis of doped perovskites for solar cell and light emitting applications.

Adam Ali, who is working towards his Master of Multidisciplinary Research in Experimental Sciences from BIST, is coming to ICFO as a student at the Molecular Nanophotonics research group led by ICREA prof. at ICFO Niek van Hulst.

Jose Javier Ruiz Gonzalez, who is studying Physical Engineering at the UPC, is coming to ICFO to join the SLN Facility research group led by ICFO Prof. Pablo Loza as a student. His position will allow him to work on non-invasive and fast molecular imaging of biological tissues.

Joan Agusti Bruzon is working towards an MSc in Photonics, and is now joining the Atomic Quantum Optics research group led by ICREA prof. at ICFO Morgan Mitchell as a student. His main tasks will involve studying quantum control of a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate.

Nick Feldman, who is studying at the Eindhoven University of Technology, is coming to ICFO as a student at the Molecular Nanophotonics research group led by ICREA prof. at ICFO Niek van Hulst. At ICFO he will be working on interferometric scattering detection of nanoparticles.

Laia Francas is joining Projects unit at ICFO to work in the project management of the Quantum Flagship.
